Creating resilience
The project “Building Resilience in Disadvantaged Young People” aims to equip children with invaluable life skills, ranging from increased resilience and confidence to social abilities. These greatly help young adults tackle issues in life, thus supporting them in becoming their own, independent individuals. The programme is offered to disadvantaged children aged 11 to 16 in the UK, focusing on areas such as Swindon, Wiltshire, and Somerset. The children will take part in the “Resilience Programme”, which uses outdoor adventure as a platform to help participants develop the previously mentioned skills.
Each young person attends twelve monthly activity days which all lead to the development of practical skills including rope knots and cooking, as well as softer skills such as teamwork, communication, resilience, and social skills. Over the course of the programme, not only will the children benefit from 1:1 mentoring helping them develop and reach their own personal goals, but there is a core of volunteers supporting the programme throughout. This provides essential consistency to the participants. All in all, a total of 320 children may be helped annually.
